#### Data Interpretation

• ( 1 ) A bath can be filled by the cold water pipe in 10 min and by hot water pipe in 15 min (independently each). A person leaves the bathroom after turning on both pipes simultaneously and returns at the moments when the bath should be full. Finding, however, that the waste pipe has been open he now closes it. In 4 min more, bath is full. In what time would be the waste pipe empty it?

• 1) 9 min
• 2) 12 min
• 3) 15 min
• 4) 14 min
• Discussion in forum
Solution : Lets assume some time l.c.m(10, 15)min = 30 min
Now in 30 min time cold water pipe will fill the bath 30/10 = 3 times whereas hot water pipe will fill it 30/15 = 2 times.
So in 30 min time bath will be filled 3 + 3 = 5 times.
=> So emptied bath will be fully filled in 30/5=6 min time if waste pipe is closed.
Initially waste pipe is opened, after 6 mins is passed and waste pipe is closed it takes 4 more minutes to fill the bath fully.
so waste pipe has emptied the 4/6 = 2/3 part of bath in 6 mins.
Rest 1/3 part of tank can be emptied by the waste pipe in 6/2 = 3 mins
So waste pipe would empty the tank in 6 + 3 = 9 min

• ( 2 ) It was calculated that 75 men could complete a piece of work in 20 days. When work was scheduled to commence, it was found necessary to send 25 men to another project. How much longer will it take to complete the work?

• 1) 20
• 2) 30
• 3) 40
• 4) None of these
• Discussion in forum
Solution : Before:
One day work = 1 / 20
One man's one day work = 1 / (20 * 75)
Now:
No. Of workers = 50
One day work = 50 * 1 / (20 * 75)
The total no. of days to complete the work = (75 * 20) / 50 = 30

• ( 3 ) A works twice as fast as B.If B can complete a work in 18 days independently, the number of days in which A and B can together finish the work is:

• 1) 4 days
• 2) 6 days
• 3) 8 days
• 4) 10 days
• Discussion in forum
Solution : Ratio of rates of working of A and B = 2 : 1. So, ratio of times taken = 1 : 2
A's 1 day's work = 1/9
B's 1 day's work = 1/18
(A+B)'s 1 day's work = (1/9) + (1/18) = 3/18 = 1/6
so, A and B together can finish the work in 6 days

• ( 4 ) A square garden has fourteen posts along each side at equal interval. Find how many posts are there in all four sides

• 1) 56
• 2) 52
• 3) 44
• 4) 60
• Discussion in forum
Solution : Reqd no. of posts = 4 (at the corners) + 4 * 12
(in between on the sides) = 4 + 48 = 52

• ( 5 ) Anil does a work in 90 days, Bittu in 40 days and Chintu in 12 days. They work one after another for a day each, starting with Anil followed by Bittu and then by Chintu. If the total wages received are Rs 360 and Anil, Bittu, Chintu share them in the ratio of the work done, find their respective individual wages.

• 1) Rs 40, Rs 60 and Rs 260
• 2) Rs 36, Rs 81 and Rs 243
• 3) Rs 42, Rs 86 and Rs 232
• 4) Rs 38, Rs 88 and Rs 234
• Discussion in forum
Answer : 2) Rs 36, Rs 81 and Rs 243
Solution : Assume there are 360 units of work (LCM of 40,60 and 12).
Hence, A,B and C can do 4,9 and 30 units per day or together 43 units every 3 days.
So In 24 days, 43 * 8 = 344 units of work is completed. In the next 2 days, 13 units are completed and on 27th day, C takes ( 1/10)th of a day to finish the rest.
So, A and B worked for 9 days each and have hence put in 36 and 81 units respectively, and the rest of the 243 units is put in by C.
The wages shall also be distributed in the same ratio as: Rs 36, Rs 81 and Rs 243

• ( 6 ) Two pipes X and Y can separately fill a cistern in 18 and 24 hours respectively. If they are turned on alternately for one hour each, how long will it take to fill the cistern?

• 1) 20 hours 30 min
• 2) 24 hours
• 3) 18 hours 30 min
• 4) 16 hours
• Discussion in forum
Answer : 1) 20 hours 30 min
Solution : (1/18) + (1/24) = 7/72
72/7 = 10 2/7
7/72 * 10 = 35/36 ----- 20 hours
WR = 1 - 35/36 = 1/36
1 h ----- 1/18
? ----- 1/36 = 1/2 hours
=> 20 1/2 hours

• ( 7 ) A man, a woman and a boy can complete a job in 3 days, 4 days and 12 days respectively. How many boys must assist 1 man and 1 woman to complete the job in 1/4th of a day?

• 1) 10
• 2) 14
• 3) 19
• 4) 41
• Discussion in forum
Solution : 1 man's 1 day's work = 1/3, 1/4 day's work = 1/3 * 1/4 = 1/12
1 woman's 1 day's work = 1/4,
1/4 day's work = 1/4 * 1/4 = 1/16
1 boy's 1 day's work = 1/12,
1/4 day's work = 1/12 * 1/4 = 1/48
Let 'x' be the No. of boys required.
Then, (1 man + 1 woman + x boy)'s 1/4 day's work (1/12) + (1/16) + (x/48) = 1 = 4 + 3 + x /48 = 1
i.e. 7 + x= 48 and x = 41.

• ( 8 ) A, B and C are employed to do a piece of work for Rs. 529. A and C are supposed to finish 19/23 of the work together. How much shall be paid to B ?

• 1) Rs. 82
• 2) Rs. 300
• 3) Rs, 92
• 4) Rs. 437
• Discussion in forum
Solution : Work done by B = 1 - (19/23) = 4/23
(A + C) : B = (19/23) : (4/23) = 19 : 4
Bs share = RS.529 * (4/23) = 92

The outlet pipe empties the tank completely in 6 hours when the inlet pipe is pluggeed. If there is a lekage also which is capable of draining out the liquid from the tank at half of the rate of outet pipe, them what is the time taken to fill the emty tank when both the pipes are opened?

• 1) 3 hours
• 2) 4 hours
• 3) 5 hours
• 4) None of these

• ( 10 ) Anil and Syam are working on a special assignment. Anil needs 6 hours to type 32 pages on a computer and Syam needs 5 hours to type 40 pages. If both of them work together on two different computers, how much time is needed to type an assignment of 110 pages?

• 1) 7 hour 15 minutes
• 2) 7 hour 30 minutes
• 3) 8 hour 15 minutes
• 4) 8 hour 30 minutes
• Discussion in forum
Answer : 3) 8 hour 15 minutes
Solution : Pages typed by Anil in 1 hour = 32/6 = 16/3
Pages typed by Syam in 1 hour = 50/5 = 8
Pages typed by Anil and Syam in 1 hour = 16/3 + 8 = 40/3
Time taken to type 110 pages when Anil and Syam work together = 110 * 3 /40 = 33/4
= 8 1/4 hours = 8 hour 15 minutes
